My Motorala Xoom Experience

First off this tablet is not cheap at $799.99 without a data plan. I have currently been using and own an iPad for the past year just to let you know where I’m coming from as a consumer. I was torn a bit between the iPad 2 and the Xoom but since I didn’t see a big reason to upgrade to the iPad 2, I thought I’d try an Android 3.0 tablet. The Xoom looked promising out of the gate but after four days of usage as an iPad replacement the Xoom and Android 3.0 really showed how inferior it is to the iPad and iOS 4.x.

The Xoom as a device was great and I had no issues with the hardware. I was very quick and responsive. But the main issue was around the applications. There were no real quality apps in comparison to what I have used on the iPad. Simple apps like email was not entirely complete. Certain email would not show images inline with the email, as they did on the iPad, forcing me to open an image in a completely different application to view it. Applications tended to crash here and there which really just killed the user experience. There were weird issues with the browser as well and flash is not 100% even though that was one of the big differentiators for going with Android 3.0.

I know some may not like what I am saying but when compared to the iPad & iOS, the experience in Android 3.0 on the Xoom was less than I’d expect for a device that costs $799.99 or even $499.99. I quickly took this back to Bestbuy for a refund. I guess I will have to wait for the iPad 3.
