My take on EMC World 2011

I amongst others spend the past week in Las Vegas for EMC World 2011. The event was big and many people came out to see what EMC and it’s partners have in store now and will be coming out with in the near future. I attended many of the sessions which talked about cloud computing, data protection and a couple about data processing. Here is some of the announcements that were made at EMC World 2011 in no particular order at all.

The theme this year was all about Cloud meets Big Data. And EMC announced new and updated products which complimented Big Data like Greenplum and Isilon. More information can be found here.

VPLEX Geo is now GA. VPLEX Geo enables active/active data over distances so that the data and applications running in multiple data centers could be seen as one highly available resource. More information on this can be found here.

Project Lightning was announced as a flash based technology that will be used in their storage arrays to provide low latency for storage and caching. The press release can be found here.

EMC Unified Infrastructure Manager (UIM) v2.1 which is used to simplify management and operations across multiple Vblock platforms was also announced. Link to the press release can be found here.

The last three here are explained more in detail by Chad Sakac here.

Last thing I’ll get into is that there seem to be a big push with Vblock. I wonder if that’s because Vblock has not taken off as expected? I see the use cases for Vblock but I felt like I should have had some money left on the night stand when it was time to leave. All in all the conference had lots of new and exciting things with great sessions. Sadly I did not get around to do any of the labs. Maybe next time.
