VMware View for Android Tech Preview

If you don’t have it already the new VMware View for Android is now available as a Tech Preview. It sports some what of a different look and feel from the iPad version and looks really nice. You will need to have a View Connector server and only VMware View 4.6 or later is supported. You’ll get PCoIP, background tasking which is a must because I really hated my session getting dropped on the iPad when I left the application, multiple broker support, and up to four recent desktops. It’s only meant to be used with android Honeycomb so if you have one of these iPad alternatives and VMware View 4.6 try it out.

You can find the application on the Android Market here.

I’ve just recently purchased an Asus Transformer tablet that is running Android 3.1 honeycomb. Everytime I launch the VMware view client and connect to a VM, the tablet instantly locks up once the desktop is loaded rendering it unusable. I have to power down the device and start over again. It’s happened 4 out of the last 5 times. Have other users experienced the same issue? Is this client still in beta? Thanks in advance for any help on this matter.

    Cheers,

    Vache

    Vache,

I am experiencing the same problem. I was concerned that it was because of the hardware I’m using (Nook Color rooted with Android 2.3), but you appear to be using a legit device and have the same thing.

From what I could tell on the Market it is not in beta, but I’m not 100% on that. Does the View server your trying to connect to run startup scripts? I know mine does.

The View client fo Android is actually a Tech Preview. I am not sure how VMware defines that but I’d guess it’s more of a release candidate (RC) and not a GA release. VMware did state that not all tablets have been tested so you may experience issues with some. I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and do not get the same issue. I like this View client even better than the iPad client because it can run in the background without disconnecting.

We did have an issue with the client after the 3.1 update on the ASUS Transformer. We Have found the issue and it will be added to the next release. Sorry for the issues, but due to #awesome feedback like this, we can apply it to the next release. Feel free to reach out on twitter @teddfox
